The MV Hephaestus ran aground at Qawra Point on February 10, 2018, due to a storm. Although the impact was strong, all seven crew members were unharmed, and the ship was not carrying cargo at the time.
Months later, the vessel was salvaged and towed to the Marsa shipyard, but the structural damage was irreparable. Instead of scrapping it, the decision was made to turn it into an artificial reef, adding to the list of wrecks in Malta.
🛥️ In August 2022, MV Hephaestus was sunk in Gozo, creating a new dive site for recreational and technical divers. Today, this wreck is one of the main underwater attractions on the island.
